Focused Genre Cohorts

The Next Steps to Teach Well from Every Part of the Bible

We know we need every book of the Bible, yet there are usually some we’re more hesitant to teach. Other passages we’ve taught plenty of times, yet we know there are nuances to the literature that escape us.

Enter: Focused Genre Cohorts

These 7-week cohorts are more advanced than our exposition cohorts and take you through material to study a genre in depth and tailor your messages to teach the literary style with all its beauty and implications. These courses are some of the fastest paced and incredibly fun.

These focused cohorts continue talking about the foundations of exposition and narrow in on how to do this in a specific genre or book.

Here’s a concept fleshed out in our Prophets Cohort

Our Genre Cohorts help us go deep into studying and teaching Old Testament Narrative, Prophecy, Poetry, or Gospel Literature. One of our favorite cohorts to teach, we consider the best tools for interpreting and teaching this type of Scripture. How does the structure, imagery, and main point of our message adjust to match the passage? How do we help our listeners love this part of the Bible? We’ll practice together and in front of an instructor and small group.

The OT Narrative Cohort ran Fall 2022, the Prophets Cohort ran Fall 2023, The Gospels Cohort ran Fall 2024. (Did you miss them and want a taste? We have short courses that cover the first session of the cohort.)

Up next? Focused Cohort: Old Testament Poetry will run Fall 2025! Weekday not yet decided, but if you register now, you are welcome to tell us the best weekday for you!

Taught by

Taylor Turkington will teach the curriculum she’s honed over many years of training and more than 15 years of teaching. Her doctoral work focused on expositions, and she trained cohorts of women when she worked at Western Seminary and for The Gospel Coalition. Taylor will be joined by a wise team of women to offer their insights.

Who is this for?

This is for women who teach the the Bible! The Focused Cohort assumes additional knowledge and experience in teaching the Bible. It doesn’t spend time in the fundamentals that we study in the Exposition Cohort, but zooms in on the details of teaching a specific genre or book. For women who want a more broad course, we recommend the Exposition Cohort. The cohorts are capped around 20 women.

Price

Early-registration price is $350. A regular ticket is $395.

When
Focused Cohort: Old Testament Poetry Cohort will run September-October 2025. The weekday evening has not yet been chosen.

The poetry of the Old Testament has much to teach us, and almost every book of the Hebrew Bible includes it. It's meant to move us, which we often realize. But we can easily ignore the way the structures, intentional and targeted imagery, and the art form is designed to train us and form us. It's transformational literature that has patterns and rules we often miss. Let's talk about parallelism, stanzas, metaphor, and the ways it teaches us to worship the good God. Ready for our practicum to be in the Psalms? This is going to be fun!

Some of the most powerful training we’ve done is with teaching teams focused on learning a new skill. If you have a team ready to learn to teach a specific genre or book of the Bible, let’s talk.
